John Coltrane is best known for weaving together evolved spiritual consciousness with virtuosic jazz chops. Less well known is that he was also an incredible balladeer whose interpretations of romantic classics still stand the test of time. Nina Simone is best known for combining uncompromising social critique with witty song writing and her sultry yet strong vocals. However, she was also a Julliard trained piano wizardess. And so it is: some of our most talented shine so brightly in one aspect that we scarcely recognize the breadth of their gifts. DJ Spinna is one of these.
Spinna is famous for his signature tribute parties, Wonderful and Soul Slam, where he transforms the song books of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Prince into a dream like journey - part history lesson, part love letter - into which packed dance floors full of soul music lovers, from LA to New York and beyond, immerse themselves year after year. Some of these folks also know that Spinna is one of a handful of djs that are as well respected for pristine house tempo mixing as they are for their hip hop rooted turntabalism.
But sometimes as Spinna is celebrated as one of the most sought after dance floor magicians of his generation, it goes unmentioned that Spinna is a heavy weight producer who has been commissioned to remix tracks by artists ranging from classic Motown (Michael Jackson and Eddie Kendricks) to contemporary soul like Mary J. Blige and Goapole. He tattooed his name on house music history with a remix of Shaun Escoffrey’s “Days Like This” and his hip hop pedigree lead him to rework tracks by De La Soul and J Dilla. He’s gotten funky with Donald Byrd’s music and gone deep into jazz artistry with the music of Betty Carter. On top of remixing, Spinna has been producing his own dope music across a spectrum of soul for years from his days as a member of the hip hop super-group Polyrhythm Addicts to his solo volume, Intergalactic Soul.
thePeople party is a perfect place for soul music lovers of all persuasions to join together - as we do every month - and celebrate the full gamut of talents that DJ Spinna has to offer. It is with great pleasure that thePeople crew powers up the decks next to this months special guest, DJ Spinna.
